Jobs in Alaska Anchorage

Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska with a population of 279,243 residents and it constitutes over 40% of the state's total population. It was recognized by The National Civic League as the friendliest city in the country. It may be one of the reasons why corporations still thrive and grow in Anchorage despite the recent economic crisis during the years 2007 and 2008. Having a relatively stable and active local economy is a factor in the abundance of jobs in Alaska Anchorage. The largest sectors in the Anchorage economy include military, local and federal government, transportation, resource extraction and tourism.

Alaska was acquired from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million in 1867 and became a United States Territory in 1912. Anchorage was a mining and fishing camp but in 1914 a railroad port for Alaska Railroad was established and the city slowly grew. When the city was incorporated in the 1920’s the economy centered on transportation which was the railroad. Anchorage experienced enormous growth as military and air transportation also became an important sector in the economy. In 1930, the growing industry of air transportation and military provided jobs in Alaska Anchorage during this time. Oil was discovered in 1968 which resulted in the boom in the oil industry and the city. The 1980’s showed continued growth and various capital project and beautification campaign in the city making it a progressive city that offers jobs in Alaska Anchorage for its increasing population.

Elmendorf Air Force Base is an important base especially during the Cold War due to its proximity to the Soviet Union and it will be a consolidated military base in Anchorage. Although Juneau is the official state capital of Alaska, most of the state and federal employees reside in Anchorage area. Approximately there are 6,800 state employees work in Anchorage and around 10,000 federal government workers. The transportation industry is also a major provider of jobs in Alaska Anchorage with the presence of the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, the third busiest airport by cargo in the world, serving routes between Asia and the lower 48 states and the Port of Anchorage which receives 95 percent of all goods entering the entire state. The abundant supply of jet fuel which is refined at refineries in Kenai or North Pole is also an advantage for the airport. For the resource sector, petroleum is the most visible industry with large multinational companies such as Conoco Phillips and BP. One-sixth of the jobs state-wide are related to this industry. Many tourists also visit Alaska every year and Anchorage is the commonly their first initial stop. Tourism and convention help Anchorage’s economy by approximately $150 million annually.
